Starbucks is a worldwide phenomenon; the first thing that comes to mind for most people when they think about coffee. All around the globe, millions are hooked on their brand. But in China, there’s currently a whole craze for a new cup design.
Cute and inspired by cats
These beautifully limited edition cups have an exciting design. They are translucent, slightly pinkish, and look like a cat putting its paw inside the cup. When the container gets filled, the liquid takes on the shape of a paw, with cute little toe pads.
There are also design elements paying homage to China, like beautiful cherry blossoms. This is a continued trend since last year when Starbucks released their first limited edition cups.
Selling out quickly
These charming cups were initially priced at 30$ and sold out in the blink of an eye. After that, Starbucks announced it would sell them again in select stores. This led to people camping out overnight to be first in a line across the country.
What’s even crazier is how fast they sold out online. It took one-tenth of one second for 1000 cups to sell online. A new batch of 3000 sold in just one second. It’s safe to say that the demand for these cute new cups is enormous.
Reselling and brawls
Because they sold out so fast all around the country, people have used the opportunity to resell these cups for a big profit. Some double the price, and some sell them for ten times the original price – almost 300 dollars!
Since these cups have come out, there have been numerous videos on the internet of people getting into fights over them. Most of those that are doing this type of stuff are middle-aged men, so we can assume they are buying them to resell later.
The only question that remains, in the end, is will these cups be sold outside of China too? Will we also get the chance to own these sweet paw shaped coffee cups? Let’s hope so – but without the fights.
