North Korean authorities make every attempt to prevent its citizens from contacting the world beyond its borders and to stop residents from being influenced by the outside world. Because of this, making an international call while in North Korea could get you executed if you’re caught. In 2013, for example, one unlucky North Korean man phoned a friend in South Korea. The cost of this friendly phone call? Death. According to Amnesty International, the government tightly controls communication technology, especially with its “enemies.”
